• Earth Hours
  Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

• Evergreen
  Evergreen is a not-for-profit organization that makes cities more livable. By deepening the connection between people and nature, and empowering Canadians to take a hands-on approach to their urban environments, Evergreen is improving the health of our cities - now and for the future.
  
  
• EcoKids Program
  Started in 1994, EcoKids is a free, environmental education program that offers curriculum-linked materials and activities for Canadian elementary schools to engage in environmental action. Children are encouraged to form their own opinions, make decisions, get involved and understand the impact their own actions have on the environment.
  
  
• Blackout Day (August 11)
  Blackout Day recognizes a massive Blackout that occurred on August 14, 2003. It was the largest blackout in North-American history, and affected significant portions of the Northeastern United States and most of Ontario for up to 3 days in some areas.
  
  
• Canadian Environment Week (May 31 - June 6, 2009)
  Canadian Environment Week is the perfect time to celebrate our achievements and initiatives in tackling climate change and reducing air pollution.
  
  
• World Environment Day
  World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.
  
  
• Earth Day Canada (www.earthday.ca)
  Earth Day Canada (EDC) is a national environmental communications organization mandated to improve the state of the environment by empowering Canadians to achieve local solutions. Since 1991, EDC has been coordinating Earth Day/Earth Month events, and creating successful community programs and award-winning artistic and media projects.
  
  
• Waste Reduction Week in Canada (October 19 - 25, 2009) - www.wrwcanada.com
  The Waste Reduction Week is developed and run by a coalition of waste reduction and conservation organizations from across Canada. The program urges everyone to do their part by reducing, reusing and recycling in every aspect of their lives - at home, school and work.
  
  
• Waste Free Lunch Challenge (www.wastefreelunch.com)
  The goal of the Ontario Waste Free Lunch Challenge (WFLC) is to help schools reduce the amount of garbage they produce and to educate students, staff, and parents about waste reduction. School lunches are a major source of waste in Ontario – the average student’s lunch generates a total of 30 kilograms of waste per school year, or an average of 8500 kilograms (18,700 lbs) of waste per school per year.
  
  
• Ontario EcoSchools (ontarioecoschools.org)
  Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education program for grades 1-12 that helps students develop ecological literacy while engaged in practices to become environmentally responsible citizens. It also helps schools and school boards improve their operations to reduce their environmental impacts.
